Derrynaflan Hoard 40th

The Discovery of the Derrynaflan Chalice 17th Feb 1980

On this day 40 years ago, the most significant find of the last century was unearthed on the Goban Saor Island (aka Derrynaflan) in the middle of the bog a few miles from Killenaule.

Initially referred to as the Killenaule Chalice and subsequently named the Derrynaflan Chalice was part of of a hoard to rival that found in Ardagh, Co. Limerick over 150 years ago. Dating from the 9th Century AD, it is larger but with a slightly less intricate gold filigree. They are all housed in the National Museum forming the premier exhibits of the Treasury Collection

If you can’t get to the National Museum, call in to the Slieveardagh Heritage Centre / Killenaule Library on River Street, Killenaule (the old Protestant church building) to see detailed photos and information on the hoard.

The annual Easter Mass of the Dawn has been celebrated yearly at Derrynaflan. (when weather permitted)
